The Assembly has a strategic role, setting priorities for the region in six key work areas:

A number of important themes run through these six priorities. Sustainability is vital to all our work as we aim to ensure that future development improves quality of life without compromising it for future generations. Monitoring is also an essential element of all our work, so that we can check progress against targets and identify any policy changes that may be needed.
