About Us
The South East England Regional Assembly is a partnership of the region's councils and communities, representing the interests of South East England. It was created in 1999 by the South East region's local authorities, following the Regional Development Agencies Act. The 111 Assembly members bring councils and communities together to make decisions on the South East region's priorities for planning, transport and housing. Members include 77 councillors plus representatives from South East England's business and voluntary sectors. All members have to follow the Regional Assembly's rules and code of conduct when carrying out Assembly business. Members are supported by a small staff in Guildford and we often work closely with regional partners. The boundaries for the South East region were set by the Government in 1992. The region covers Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey and West Sussex. Further information on our responsibilities and vision can be found in the What We Do section.
The Regional Assembly is funded partly by member subscriptions and partly through contributions from Government. Details of how the Regional Assembly is run and its finances can be found in Corporate Information. The future of the AssemblyThe Government has published plans to disband regional assemblies by April 2010. For more information see our Sub-national Review page. Assembly meetingsThe Regional Assembly meets in full three times a year at locations around South East England. Our Executive Committee meets six times a year, and our Regional Planning Committee meets at least six times a year. The South East England Regional Transport Board (which advises Government on South East transport investment priorities) and South East England Regional Housing Board (which works to improve South East housing quality and supply) are both chaired and run by the Regional Assembly. All of these meetings are open to the public. For more information on the Regional Assembly visit our FAQS and Fact or Fiction pages. You can also check job vacancies on the Working For Us page.
