SOUTH EAST STAKEHOLDERS GATHER FOR UNIQUE SUMMIT ON REGENERATION

Regeneration in the South East will be discussed by over 150 specialists from public, private and voluntary bodies when they gather at the Tower Thistle Hotel, Brighton and Hove today (Thursday 14 June). Acknowledging the need for organisations to work together to ensure regeneration is sustainable, not spasmodic, delegates will discuss key regeneration issues facing the South East now and in the future.

The Conference is organised by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) in conjunction with the Government Office of the South East (GOSE), South East England Regional Assembly and Regional Action and Involvement South East (RAISE). Sir Peter Hall, Member of the Urban Task Force and Bartlett Professor of Planning at the University of London, will address the conference about best practice in urban renaissance in the South East.

Sir Peter said: “The URBED-UCL study of Best Practice in Urban Regeneration shows just how well some places in the South East are doing. What it does not show is how hard it was to find them! We badly need to spread the message about Good Practice more widely – which is why it is so important, as soon as possible, to create a Centre of Excellence in Urban Renaissance for the South East, drawing from and contributing to the centre already set up for London.”

Other speakers will address:

  • The region working together
  • The need for on the ground community practitioners and cultural change
  • Harnessing the potential of the business community in delivering regeneration
  • Case studies within the Brighton area

Notes to editors:

  1. The Regional Assembly is the “voluntary regional chamber” for the South East. It was established in January 1999 to give a representative voice to the South East region which covers Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Oxfordshire, and Surrey.

  2. The Assembly is made up of 111 members including elected councillors nominated by the region’s local authorities and 37 representatives from other sectors of the community (including business, trades unions, education, housing, health, sports, culture, tourism, faith groups, environmental, community and voluntary organisations).

  3. The Assembly has three areas of core business:
    1. It is the representative voice of the South East, engaging and representing its member organisations and, through them, the wider public.

    2. The Assembly has a specific role under the Regional Development Agencies' Act 1998 to ensure the accountability of the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) to the region.

    3. The Assembly has been the Regional Planning Body for the South East since April 2001. It has responsibility for proposing strategic planning and transport policies to Government.
