Railways in South East EnglandRailways form a vitally important part of the transport network in South East England. Whilst links to London dominate the network, there are some important East-West connections within the South East region itself, and those which connect to principal destinations in other regions. Ten companies operate networks within the region:
Maps showing the major routes and operators can be seen on the National Rail website. AirtrackHeathrow AirTrack is a proposed project offering direct trains to Heathrow Terminal 5 from Reading, Woking, Guildford and London Waterloo. The AirTrack Forum, of which the Regional Assembly is a member, commissioned a consultant to assess the economic benefits of AirTrack. The study demonstrated that the new service has the potential to deliver significant wider economic benefits because of improved connectivity. This means that the business case is even stronger than previously estimated. The Regional Transport Board considered the study in January 2008 when it reaffirmed its support for AirTrack . It will continue to work with stakeholders to deliver the project faster. BAA is working on the development of a Transport and Works Act (TWA) order obtaining permission for AirTrack to be built. As part of the preparation, BAA is defining the details of the project. The implications of any changes will need to be reflected in the business case. It is anticipated that
BAA will undertake a consultation on the TWA order in the second half of 2008. Rail Ticket Data AnalysisAs part of the work in supporting the Regional Spatial Strategy (The South East Plan), a study of ticket sales data was carried out. This report provides a spatial analysis of travel patterns by rail over the last 10-20 years, and has been updated to reflect movement within the region, and also to key destinations outside of the region including London.
