PortsPorts are fundamental to the UK economy, as nationally they handle around 95% of the country's imports and exports. The South East Plan recognises this emphasising the region's role as an international gateway and acknowledging that the ports rely on the quality of infrastructure, such as roads and rail, to provide good links to elsewhere in the country. Ports Policy ReviewGovernment's Ports Policy Review consultation document was published in May 2006, following the submission of the South East Plan. Forecasting work in the Review makes clear South East ports will continue to be dominant. This is due to their location, size and the region's existing infrastructure. The Assembly believes that Government policy fails the ports sector by not providing a national framework for port development and failing to develop the land-based infrastructure they need.
