Ecological Footprint
If everyone in the world lived the lifestyle we lead in the South East then we would need three-and-a-half planets to support us. We are currently consuming more than our 'fair share' of the earth's natural resources and the 'route map' below identifies actions that can help to stabilise and then reduce the South East's Ecological Footprint. The research has been developed in conjunction with SEEDA and WWF, to help the region develop sustainably in the future.

Rapid Sustainability Appraisal
This report explains how a Rapid Sustainability Appraisal (RSA) can be carried out for Community Strategies (including Community Plans, Sustainable Community Strategies etc) and Local Area Agreements. RSA is different from the formal, comprehensive sustainability appraisal process used for Development Plan Documents or Regional Spatial Strategies: it is less focused on alternatives, less evidence-based, and much quicker.

Water Supply and Demand
The Environment Agency and the South East region's water companies have provided advice to the Assembly on water supply and demand. This has involved development of a range of scenarios for different levels of growth, water efficiency, and development of new water resources over the next 20-25 years. The report is informing the development and appraisal of policies and spatial options of the draft South East Plan.

Adapting to climate change impacts on water management: A Guide for Planners
Developed by the Regional Assembly, as part of the ESPACE project, the Planners' Guide to adapting to climate change impacts on the water environment has been designed as an electronic resource, available to download below.
It answers key questions about adapting to climate change, and contains ten case-studies along with many short examples to illustrate important principles. The focus of the Guide is a menu of adaptation options which should be considered for inclusion in development plans, policy documents and developments in the region.

Carbon Trajectories
The Assembly has produced carbon trajectories to explore the potential to achieve carbon dioxide reduction targets set out in the South East Plan and the Climate Change Bill. The trajectories primarily focus on mitigation measures that can be delivered through the planning system. The Assembly is currently updating the trajectories to incorporate the 2006 carbon dioxide estimates and revised estimates for 2005 that were recently published by DEFRA.

Waste Management Capacity
The Regional Assembly (now the South East England Partnership Board) and SERTAB commissioned ERM consultants to develop a model and monitoring tool to assess waste management capacity against forecast needs. Data on capacity of different types of waste treatment technologies has recently been updated, drawing on information from the Environment Agency and the region's Waste Planning Authorities (WPAs). This model is an update of earlier versions and uses data for end of 2008.
The model data is being continuously updated and kept under review. Data updates will be requested from WPAs via SERTAB to feed into the Partnership Board's annual Regional Monitoring Report (RMR) timetable. Data will be requested to meet the next RMR data submission deadline date of 31 October 2009. This will be followed by a data update request for April 30 2010 as part of continuous 6 months data review cycle.
The model enables monitoring of existing and planned waste management capacity at sub-regional (WPA) level, which then is summed to provide an overall picture at the regional level. It is designed to enable regular updating by WPAs to keep the data 'live' and for use in their Annual Monitoring Reports, and in turn the Regional Monitoring Report. The model will also be used by to inform the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS). The model generates 3 Scenarios. The Assembly has adopted Scenario 1 for monitoring purposes.
